Shades of Brazil--The 1985 Dystopian Film?

Saw this photo today from the major tournament now under way in Norway. For some odd reason it reminded me of the film Brazil with Jonathan Pryce and Robert De Niro from 1985.

Video of Tal Playing Kasparov Shortly Before Tal's Death

I've been going through Tal's book of his match with Botvinnik in which he won the World Championship. That was 1960. Here is a photo of him in 1962. The video shows him playing chess with Gary Kasparov shortly before Tal's death at age 55. Very sad...........
https://youtu.be/Q6nUvp5WRl4

And here is that blitz game taken form Volume II of Kasparov's Great Predecessors series. Kasparov says that he survived the attack, but lost to Tal on time. A respectful tribute by Kasparov to Tal, IMO.

Gender Based Chess Trophies Awarded Based On Wearing Pink or Blue Clothing??

Yes, indeed. Posted on the USCF Issues Forum by Robert Jones, a promoter in Texas and a director of the Texas Chess Association.
" Last Saturday, we awarded 4 trophies to the boys wearing the most blue, and to the 4 girls wearing the most pink. And, overall, we had a record attendance. For if they do not enter through the door, theyare not going to play. Bottom line is, not why they come, but that they do come."
I wonder what a transgender chess playing youth would wear? Should organized chess be reinforcing gender stereotypes based on traditional perceptions of blue and pink for male and female babies? The only people who appear to see nothing problematic about this are the denizens of the USCF Issues Forum. Attempts to present factual information regarding gender stereotyping and its harmful effects on girls and women are removed and censored by the USCF forum moderators.
Frankly, I'm appalled, though not surprised, that this was done. What is more upsetting is that it is not only condoned, but applauded by at least one member of the US Chess Executive Board, Randy Bauer.

FIDE Bozos At It Again in the Back of the Bus (Moscow)

FIDE has suspended the Ukraine Chess Association and un-rated it's players impacting player's abilities to earn a living.

I suspect that by effectively punishing chess players by possibly denying them the right to earn a living, FIDE is violating human rights laws of the European Union and engaging in tortious and actionable interference with the economic and emotional well-being of these chess players. FIDE has also left itself open to claims before CAS. We all know how that went for FIDE When Susan Polgar took FIDE to arbitration.

Bobby Fischer Listed In Panama Papers

In an interview in the latest New In Chess with Pal Benko, Benko states that he was Bobby's financial adviser. When the full list comes out in early May, look for many more chess names of players and administrators past and present to float to the surface like putrid floatsam.

Women Chess Players of the World--UNITE!!!

Actually, last month I officially made a proposal to FIDE to change the format of the Women’s World Championship. I suggested three reasonable alternatives but the answer I received seems to indicate that my proposal was not accepted. The main reason why they want to stick to the current system is the fact that it is easier to find sponsors if you call the knock-out tournament “World Championship”. If you called it "World Cup" it would be extremely difficult to find sponsors.--Women's World Champion Hou Yifan

Knockout tournaments should not, in this writer's opinion, be used for determining world chess championships. Match play is the long standing tradition in chess for determining who is worthy of the title World Champion. Knockouts were tried by FIDE for the men's championship some years ago---anyone remember those "champions?"
